CONTACT YOUR CITY COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE TO INCREASE SUMMER JOBS AND AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
POWER..come out, come out wherever you are. The Safe and Sound Campaign calls upon the City Council to use their statutory authority to make sure that the $10.2 million required to increase youth after school activities and summer jobs is in the FY '13 City Budget. The Council passed two Resolutions to:
1) double after school funding (adding $4.2 million to the budget)
2) double the number of youth summer jobs (adding $6 million to the budget)
To use their power, the Council needs cover -- so that there is no retaliation, which can happen in a strong Mayoral form of government. We are asking the Council to be RESOLVED to get the money in the budget and have committed to let their constituents know that they need support to be RESOLVED. Council members are signing on, so far:
That's 3 members -- we only need 5 more to get the money for our youth. Let your Council Representative know that you need him or her to make his or her vote on the city budget contingent on the Mayor including the $10.2 million for our children and youth.
TAKE ACTION NOW!
CONTACT THE GOVERNOR TO REINVEST THE JAIL DOLLARS FOR OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUTH.
RECREATE DON'T INCARCERATE! CUT THE CHECK!
Baltimore City does not need a new jail -- but we do need to stop violating federal law. The Safe and Sound Campaign has a solution! The state can use the same funding reserved for the jail to:
1. Create alternatives to detention
2. Renovate and equipt City recreation centers
3. Renovate public schools
4. Hire youth and adults to run these effective programs
Using the proposed jail money for the above will increase public safety, improve outcomes for youth in the justice system and save the state money.
