Be part of a community that takes action to protect children by volunteering with us. We have volunteer opportunities to suit a variety of schedules, skills, and interests — from serving meals to our families to answering calls for our 24-hour parent helpline.

Individual

All of our individual volunteer opportunities require a volunteer application, interviews, training, and ongoing commitments ranging from six weeks to a year.

Group

Whether you’re volunteering with your workplace, church, school, or other community group, there are several group volunteer opportunities that are suitable for teams of 5 – 25 volunteers.

Individual Volunteer Opportunities

We’re currently recruiting for the following long-term volunteer positions. Volunteers interested in these positions are strongly encouraged to attend a Volunteer Information Session — stay tuned for upcoming dates.

talk line telephone counselor

Time Commitment: 1 year, 4 hours / week
Training Required: 3 weeks
Location: Safe & Sound (1757 Waller Street / Haight)

The TALK Line, a 24 / 7 parental support line, is staffed primarily by volunteers.  The TALK Line, short for Telephone Aid in Living with Kids, handles about 10,000 calls per year, offering round-the-clock telephone counseling to anyone seeking support on topics related to caring for children. As a TALK Line Telephone Counselor, you will be part of a supportive network that parents can reach out to in times of need and lean on to cope with stress.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Serve as a compassionate, non-judgmental listener for parents and caregivers in distress
  • Make weekly, outgoing calls to a caseload of 1 – 5 assigned clients desiring ongoing support
  • Attend a weekly, one-on-one, meeting with a supervisor to debrief calls

TALK Line volunteer shifts are available 7 days per week between 8am and 11pm. Volunteers must complete an initial 30+ hours of training over the course of about 3 weeks – 4 weeknights and 2 full Saturdays of classroom instruction; followed by 5 – 10 hours of hands-on training, listening and responding to live calls with supervision.

Once trained, volunteers are expected to spend 4 – 5 hours per week handling calls at the Safe & Sound main office in Haight-Ashbury for a minimum of 1 full year.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age to participate and pass a criminal background check.

Location: Safe & Sound, main office in Haight-Ashbury

The Children’s Playroom provides therapeutic childcare for children while their parents meet with counselors, attend workshops, or utilize other services offered by Safe & Sound Family Support Center. As a Playroom Caregiver, you’ll help parents with young children receive the supportive services they need and help children build valuable social and emotional skills.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Supervise playtime, read stories, lead crafts, and serve snack for children up to age 12 – primarily babies, toddlers, and preschoolers – while their parents are utilizing services at the Safe & Sound Family Support Center
  • Sort donations — toys, children’s clothing, baby furniture, etc. — and display them in a donation area for parents to take
  • Complete 30-minute check-in phone call with Playroom staff once per month

Playroom volunteer shifts are available Monday – Thursday, 9:30am – 12pm and 12pm – 2:30pm. Volunteers must attend an initial 4-hour training on a weekday evening, pass a criminal background check, and pass a TB test.

Once trained, volunteers are expected to spend 2.5 hours per week volunteering for a minimum of 6 consecutive months.
