Paige Rausser: Caring, Loud & Opinionated

Page RausserI’m thrilled to have you meet Paige, a dear friend who I introduced to the Prevention Center years ago at Blue Ribbon Luncheon. Paige was deeply moved by the mission of the organization and shortly after began volunteering in our Therapeutic Children’s Playroom. I’m so grateful for her friendship and her support of the Prevention Center — the kids love her too!

Q: Tell me about your life.
A: I’m a mom of two girls (ages 16 and 12) and I love being their parent.  My husband and I chose to raise our children in San Francisco so they could be exposed to the city’s diversity. I’ve worked in land conservation for the past 18 years. I sometimes wonder if I chose my career over again that I might become a social worker.

Q: What are you most passionate about?
A: I am most passionate about my children. I grew up with divorced parents, so giving my children a stable and balanced home life is very important to me. I also just love their personalities — the good and the challenging.

Q: Why did you first give your time & money to the Prevention Center?
A: I was very moved by the Blue Ribbon Luncheon. It took a few years to get it together to start donating and volunteering. My husband and I each chose an organization to focus on (in addition to our kids’ schools) and mine is the Prevention Center. I make the time because it’s important to me to be there. I work part time, which frees me up to do a morning a week in the playroom.

Q: Why do you continue to support the Prevention Center?
A: Volunteering reinforces my desire to donate to the Prevention Center. I’m incredibly impressed with the staff and I really appreciate the philosophy in the Therapeutic Playroom. I think working there makes me a better parent — it gives me perspective on my own parenting.

Q: What do you do when you’re volunteering here at the Prevention Center?
A: I work in the Therapeutic Playroom; I play with kids while their parents are in classes or meeting with Prevention Center staff.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about at the firehouse?
A: The kids.

Q: How would you describe your personal mission?
A: I try not to take myself too seriously. I enjoy life.

Q: If you could change the world, what would you do?
A: Wow, that is a big question.  I guess I would make it so that everyone had the same access to a good life – a job, a home, good mental health.

Q: What makes you angry / sad?
A: Seeing people in emotional pain makes me sad.

Q: What makes you hopeful / happy?
A: Kind people make me happy. I love all the friends I have met in San Francisco. I feel lucky to know many fun and interesting people.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about San Francisco?
A: I like living in a city with similarly progressive people.
